I bought an inexpensive flag. I pulled an old window out of the the pile in the garage, (I really should just call that area my "project supply unit" because it houses my creative junk and my cars have to sit outside). I made a template approximately the size of each window pane.
Then I used the template to cut the flag into pieces that would fit inside each pane. I felt a little strange about cutting the flag, but I'm still honoring the flag with the finished project. My son asked if I was committing treason. My husband said he hoped I wouldn't have bad luck for cutting a flag. I think he mixed up cutting the flag with breaking a mirror.
I sprayed adhesive on each pane and adhered each flag piece.
I love the finished project! It shows my patriotism.
I hope I don't get arrested for treason,

Joy - I just found you through 'Ask Kari & Kijsa' and I am so glad that I did! I have been wanting to do something 'Americana' for our mantle, but everything I see to buy is made in China - and somehow that just seems wrong! So glad to have stumbled across you wonderful ideas. I wish I could hire you to come and design a bit for my home! I like your style!

I missed the window flag earlier, but it is great. As soon as my husband came in from work I was asking about the bead board..Both are wonderful projects.
Your window looks great. I'd love to make one of those. It would look so nice out all summer and then in my classroom for the school year. Maybe tomorrow. Lots of window sitting aroung right now...

you had me outside at midnight last night measuring my old window with my newly purchased flag! I'm going to try this! I want mine to be temporary...and will display it ouside....can I remove the adhesive when I'm finished with the flag? Love your blog!

Just found you and what an awesome blog you have! Love your Patriotic decorations. I've been going back thru your posts and came across the one "Make Do or Do Without" or I think that's what you titled it. It was about your entry area flooring, going from honeycomb style tile to new subflooring that you painted and glazed. I have a ton of questions about how you did it, what colors you used, what kind of wood you used for your replacement subflooring, etc.
We had our home rented out for four years and when we moved back in two years ago the carpets had to be ripped out. We discovered badly scarred and discolored wood flooring which some day we'll refinish but in our dining room and connecting hallway it was subflooring only. On the positive it's real wood subflooring vs the bits and pieces of wood chips pressed together type subflooring that my husband says I absolutely can not paint as it will swell up (we have that in the laundry room)! lol I think what I have in the dining room is called plywood? The surface is smooth. Is this a candidate for the type of project you did on your entry area flooring? OK sorry to type out such a long comment but I totally love how your entry area looks and it would certainly help me to make do till I can do better since I think I can afford some paint and poly coat stuff, lol Please visit my blog and leave me some directions or an email or something, pretty pretty please! I'm so inspired by your floor! And your decorating style is wonderful. TIA!

Would cutting up the flag be considered mutilation? I don't know. However, there are no flag police. You can't be prosecuted for it. And I imagine you meant no disrespect. Perhaps one could think of it as if you were Betsy Ross creating a flag for display---which is exactly what you were doing.
I think I'd feel a little funny about cutting a flag up, but seriously, I'm sure I can find blue fabric with white stars and white and red striped fabric, and that would be awesome! I love the finished project. I wish my husband wasn't so good about getting rid of everything he considers "junk" around here!
