Look at these beauties I found at the thrift store!I bought the only two they had.
If there were four,
I would have used them as legs for a table. But there were only two,
so now those stair balusters
are huge candle holders! My hubby added the base and molding.
I could do it, (just not as fast).
But he likes to call this OUR blog,
so he helps me build things.
He thinks you should know that those two candles
used to be one giant crooked candle
that I bought for $1.I let it sit out in the heat of the sun.
When it was warm and soft,
I rolled it like dough to get it straight.
Then I used the compound miter saw to cut it in two.
Hubby said, "You never cease to amaze me
what you will cut with that saw. A candle??? Wow!"
While I was out of the room, he added those last lines.
I guess it really is OUR blog now.

ReplyDeleteGosh just another great idea..I have some of those things left over from building our house. I am going to have to get them out. You know candle sticks that big are just so high...Love the decor as always Joy.
ReplyDeleteLove the giant candlesticks! I don't know if I could pull something off like that. You always make things look great in your home! Love that you cut the candle too!
ReplyDeleteBlessings to you and yours,
maybe the only thing keeping my inner creativity trapped is the fact that i don't have a mitre saw?!?
ReplyDeleteOMG...another fabulous idea. Those are PERFECT as tall candle sticks. You and your hubby did a GREAT job!!!
ReplyDeleteOh Sherm... I love how those comments really capture the Shermness of it all. I miss you guys terribly.
ReplyDeleteI was just thinking the other day how I could use some of those. Well now I know! :)
ReplyDeleteWhat a great idea. I LOVE this. I'm keeping my eye out around here where homes are being gutted :)
ReplyDeleteGreat find! Love them as candle holders!
ReplyDeleteHow cute, about your husband! And how cool that he can make things for you;)
ReplyDeleteI love the idea and the look of the table arrangement! Gorgeous!
Welcome to the blog world dad!
ReplyDeleteOh My!!! Why wasn't I with you when you found these!!!
ReplyDeleteGo to the bottom of MY BLOG, and see if you can do with those posts...besides candleholders! I try to pick these up EVERYWHERE...not easy to find, and I have resolved myself to cutting up Headboards and Footboards of discarded/cheap beds!
Love the WHoLe thing about crooked candles, sunlight, and MAN-TOOLS! My own hubby is amazed at what I can come up with from cans we ate dinner out of! LOL!
Great to see you!
How fun! We will ALL be looking forward to hearing more from your HUBBY!! Maybe he will post something by himself :o)
ReplyDeleteYou have some imagination, what a great idea! Your hubby is so sweet, when I ask my hubby for help on my projects he tells me, "whats wrong with the way it looks now?", lol.
ReplyDeleteWow, what a great idea. They look amazing. You would have paid a ton for those in the little boutiques here. The best part is that your hubby helped you. My hubby will help, but I have to wait for a while until he has time. Enjoy his willingness to get crafty with you.
ReplyDeleteI don't have the space for giant candlesticks as far as scale would dictate, but I love the idea! I have warmed and rolled crooked candles often - and used a huge drill bit to scoop out enough to fit a plain glass votive holder or a tea light - this worked really well for decorating for our church when our budget didn't allow for frequent candle replacements! Power tools are our friends, right?
ReplyDeleteI had a good day at the Goodwill on Monday - but I have yet to transform my fantastic finds! I can't even take the 'before pictures' because we need batteries - we stole them from everywhere during our time without power! We are usually be better prepared - Ike's windy gift caught us off guard!
I long for more time to re-purpose - you have given me so many great ideas, but this is a busy season of life! I don't get much time with homeschooling during the day and it is getting dark too early to spray paint after supper, baths and bedtime - I'll have to try to squeeze it in at lunchtime!
I was wondering if you spray paint the harp when you paint a lamp - I bought two lamps that are the same tall buffet lamps for $2 each but they are different colors and one has a harp and one doesn't. The harp is bright cheap brass and I am planning to paint the lamps chocolate brown and then fleck them with bronze (totally taking your lead!). What do you think?
They look great!
ReplyDeleteTHat looks great!! Never would have thought to add moulding, thanks for the idea!! What a good, handy guy you have :)
ReplyDeleteBlessings,
Stacey
What a great project! I would love some tall candlesticks like that.
ReplyDeleteI'm impressed with candle.
A candle and a mitre saw, I believe I have now heard it all. Great job!!! I love big candle holders.
ReplyDeleteMan, and I've been on the lookout for tall chunky candlesticks like that for the mantle! My bookcases on either side of the fireplace are so tall that I really need some heighth on the mantle. Great job, and I love the candle idea, what a money saver! ~Becky~
ReplyDeleteThat is FABULOUS! On our trip to Memphis I found big vintage spindles and it was killing me because I had no idea what to do with them. Now I'm REALLY kicking myself for not buying them! They look awesome!! Great thinking!
ReplyDeleteI am so sorry that I used your pictures without asking first.. I just seen your copyright statement on your blog. While I did copy your pictures. I posted your site name and a link.

What a great team the two of you make. Those are some killer candle holders! Hubby did a great job adding the moldings. And I'm totally in awe about you fixing the crooked candle...great info! Have a terrific week.
ReplyDeleteLove those ginormous (my teenager's word!) candlesticks!
ReplyDeleteTell your hubby he did a great job! ;)
ReplyDeleteI'm laughing as I comment...My word, Joy...does your creative side ever relax? Love it:)
ReplyDeleteI love this project you created! As I looked at those ballusters, the first thing that came to MY MIND was to use them under a countertop of an island to make it look more custom and cottage like. Maybe I'll have to do that with my island!
ReplyDeleteLove this!! Your hubby sounds funny! :)
ReplyDeleteAnother great idea from you, Joy! You must sit around & dream these things up every day. I'd love to have a compound miter saw, lucky you.
ReplyDeleteOh how cute! i just love these. :)

ReplyDeleteYour husband is hilarious. I love it! And I love that you took a miter saw to that candle. Way to go!

ReplyDeleteFantastic idea! Love it.
ReplyDeleteI have some balusters exactly like these that I got from my husband's grandmother's house. She lives in a very old house and I think they came off the outside railing. My husband made me some lamps out of them and they turned out so good. I am going to copy your candleholders - LOOOOOVE THEM!!!
ReplyDeleteJoy, tell the Mister that I think both of you are adorable! Love the candlesticks- they would also be beautiful on a hearth.
ReplyDeletethey look terrific! Love the detail that hubby added! I'm amazed that you set the candle in the sun and let it warm, then rolled it! Terrific idea!
