Inside this little container is enough food to sustain a person for three days. All that is needed is the drinking water to go along with this canister. It's so small that you can keep it in your car or at your office, or in a closet at home.
It was in my pile to remind me to buy the supplies to make one for each member of my family. Even though it's not decorative, I thought I'd share it with you. In light of all of the natural disasters lately, it's always good to be prepared.
Here's a look at all that's packed inside.

No, these are not gourmet meals. It is meant to sustain you in an emergency. This is just an example of what can be done. I plan on adjusting some of the items to fit the tastes of the members in my family. I like that it is so compact and all of the items can be purchased at the grocery store. It is something I can do now to bless my family in a time of need.
If you plan on making these, remember to add the necessary drinking water and put the expiration date of each item on the label of the canister so you can always keep things fresh.
The canister is a plastic 3 quart size. I've seen similar ones at the dollar store. You could also combine the entire family's storage into one plastic bin.

Great list! We have been working on our food storage lately, and I need to update the food itmes in our 72 hour kits....love the list. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteTrue, it is something that is hard to think about, and not near as fun, but also in light of all the stuff going on, better to be prepared!
I can't believe ALL OF THAT was packed in the jar! Amazing!! I'm definitely sharing this with my hubby and put some together for our family! Thank you!!
ReplyDeletehow neat is that...I can't believe it all fit...good thing to have around even though I would hope never to need it:)
ReplyDeleteGreat idea! Can you please share the dimensions of that jar?? Also, where can that jar be found??
ReplyDeleteI love this idea. Thank you for posting it.
I like that it's compact. We did ours in sweatshirts. They are bulky and take up a lot of room. what size is your container?
ReplyDeleteGotta love food storage in a can!! I have made an re-made a version of that (but in a #10 can) a couple of times for my family. It is great just in case - be prepared, of course!
ReplyDeleteI'd also like to know about the jar - I like that it's semi-transparent. This is a great little idea, and I like that the contents are things my family could eat now because they actually like them - so when they expire we have a little treat and refill the jar.
ReplyDeleteI edited the post to add the size of the container, but if you didn't read it there...the canister is a plastic 3 quart size. Look at the dollar store for similar ones.
ReplyDeleteThat is really a neat idea! I need to do this and have them on hand.
ReplyDeleteGreat one! If people are doing this at home and it is really for 'emergency' might not want hot cocoa (might not be able to boil/heat water) and I would maybe put some powded milk, milk flavor (easy protein), whey protein and get high fat/high fiber/high calorie items. No low fat, no sugar things unless diabetic etc.. If you figure the idea is ti keep your energy/health a few hundred calories can be good.
ReplyDeleteAlthough, I could probably go food free for WAY longer than 72 hours and be FINE!
What a great idea. Thank you for posting this!
ReplyDeleteJoy,
ReplyDeleteWonderful idea, thanks for sharing! I will defintely make some for our tornado shelter. :0)

We did something very similar to these in January for Enrichment...I copied enough for each member of my family and put one in each of our emergency backpacks. Very cool....
ReplyDeleteI hope I'm not being presumptuous by sharing this, Joy, feel free to erase this comment. We weren't able to find any of these containers at our local $1 stores. We ended up getting our plastic containers from a company in SLC that was very reasonable. Here is their contact info in case anyone else is interested:

Hi Joy! Great idea! My husband got stuck last spring at a gas station an hour from home because the power went out all around after a storm and he couldn't make it home without gas!! He was really hungry too so this would have come in handy! (Of course if he would keep his tank filled...lol)Must do this one!!! Have a great day - Jeannette
ReplyDeleteVery good idea. I think I need to make one or some of those.
ReplyDeletegreat idea for a gift. we have done this and sealed them in a tin can.
ReplyDeleteWe just made up emergency backpacks for each of us in our family. We keep them by our beds so if we need to leave in a hurry It's right where we can find them. We made sure to put in a change of clothes. I like your idea for the car. We were just talking about needing something for the car.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the great tip.
What a great idea! I would never have believed all that stuff was in there if I hadn't seen the pictures! Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteJoy, this is great! Thanks for sharing!! I too want to go make some for all of my family members. I've got some hunters in my family and this could really come in handy for them to pack in their hunting bags. Thank you so much! I've seen little sardine cans filled with "stuff" to use in an emergency but never a foodie thing like this. Awesome! I'm actually going to do a shout out about this on my blog and link your post up to it.
ReplyDeleteSuch a great idea. A gal pal and I were just talking about being prepared for emergencies and how even when you think you are you probably aren't. I am definitely going to make these and put them in the emergency bin I am working on. GREAT idea.
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing your idea! We have been trying to work on food storage in our home, and anything that would make putting a 72 hour kit together easier, I am all for!
ReplyDeleteI must have my head in the sand because I'm surprised that so many of your commenters have already done something like this, or have emergency backpacks, etc. This is a really good idea, though, and maybe this was just the kick in the pants I needed to do something like this!
ReplyDeleteLove this idea. Here is Hurricane Florida this will be a very nice thing to do for my family. I would love to share this on my own blog, if I could please have your permission?
ReplyDeleteThanks so much,
Angie

ReplyDeleteWhat a great idea! Thanks for sharing. Sally
ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful idea! I am really in awe that you were able to get all of that in one jar! Good idea about the expiration dates to. Really really great idea! Thanks for sharing..need to look for a jar now! Knowing me I'd eat it before the disaster strikes!...lol
ReplyDeleteLadies,
ReplyDeleteI would be happy if you shared this idea on your blogs.
Really cool! I can't believe all of that stuff was inside of that little container.
ReplyDeleteThanks for posting this. This is a GREAT idea and great list. I like how compact it is. I am going to make some of these for my family!

My goddness! What a great gift! After Hurricane Ike I am very much into Emergency Preparedness!!! :) Thanks! I'll be making these for those I love!
ReplyDeleteOh my goodness oh my goodness! I have been away too long and you have been BUSY!! More to add to my "One day in my dreams I will make all of this COOL stuff" list. yes, I have one.
ReplyDeleteThat is such a great idea! Let us know what you put in yours! I would love to hear more ideas! Thanks!
ReplyDeleteWonderful!!! I am thrilled to see this because it's just the motivation I need to get my kits done! Thank you so much!
ReplyDeleteI've heard if you dry pack these kits into a #10 can with a canner (our ward has one) they last a long time.
This is soooo cool! I have never seen those Jif TO GO before but I am sure I can find it. This is so motivating, because I CAN do this. aybe, just maybe this will be our Christmas gifts to family members!
ReplyDelete♥Jen
This is a very good idea. I must admit that I like vienna sausages and you (and whoever may read this comment) are the only ones I've EVER TOLD!!! Guilty!
ReplyDeleteI LOVE this idea and am going to do it!
ReplyDeleteI love it. That plastic is lighter than the #10 cans but still waterproof and you could multi use the jar. For what I don't know, but you'd have it. Also, my neighbor lets her kids eat the soon to be expired food from their 72 hr kits on conference weekend. That way you check it every 6 months and update it with new food. Mimi
ReplyDeleteWhat a GREAT idea!!!
ReplyDeleteWow, I can't believe all of that fit in that 3 qt canister! This is such an excellent tip. I'll definitely do this. I've been meaning to do something like this, but just never got around to it. :)
ReplyDeleteJoy...thank you for sharing this...I've had it on my mind lately that I need to redo my 72 hour kits...especially in light of the fact that I've added 2 more kiddos to the pack since the last time I updated them (scary, huh?) I'm going to get on it!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the idea--love it!
ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful idea! I need to get my winter car emergency kit ready for the Midwest winter just ahead. Thanks for the reminder!
ReplyDeleteI did a whole post on 72 hours kits a couple of weeks ago during conference and this is the best idea I've seen yet. We've decided to help our married daughter start her long-term food storage for Christmas this year. It's what she really wants and I could add in these kits for her and her husband and make one up for their 3-month-old. Thanks for the great idea, it's just what I've been praying for to add to their gift!
ReplyDeleteGreat idea. It's one of those things that I guess unless you've been through it, like you, it isn't a thought in the mind. Take care and thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteThis is the best idea!!! Thank you sooo much for sharing with us! I can't wait to make one for each of my family members! Can I post it on my blog so everyone can come check out yours?
ReplyDeleteThis would make a great Christmas gift to give my hard to shop for brothers. And I can use coupons for most of it.
ReplyDeleteI'm going to copy your list and start stockpiling things to make these.
