Because I haven't paid much attention to blogging this week I am going to change the deadline for the 31 gifts giveaway from this Saturday to next Tuesday, February 22nd at midnight. That will give you plenty of time to check out the catalog and enter the giveaway.
Speaking of vacations, do you see that big empty corner in my living room? That's where my suitcase stack usually resides. It's also the spot where we put the Christmas tree, so when Christmas came the suitcases took a vacation to the basement. After taking down the tree it seemed so nice to have an empty spot that I didn't rush to bring up the suitcases again---that and I was feeling too exhausted to make the trip down and up the stairs five times carrying suitcases. Did you know that vintage suitcases are heavy even when they're empty? It makes one appreciate the lighter, though characterless, version we have today.
After a couple of weeks of suitcase stack freedom I began to question whether they should return. True, the stack has become my signature piece, both in blogging and in my living room. But just because it's a big statement item doesn't mean that I have to live with it forever. How many things do we keep in our home just because they have always been there? I think that it's nice at times to live without an item to see if you still love it. Living without an item makes it easier to decide if maybe it's time to change things up a bit, either by moving the item to another room or by getting rid of it all together.
After living without my vintage suitcases for two months
I decided that I still love them and that I still want them to be
an important part of my living room's decor. So little by little they reappeared in the room where they belong. My signature piece is back and I am happy.

I'm curious, do you have a signature item in your home?

Glad you are feeling better, Joy! I keep my fingers crossed every Winter that the flu will pass me by {knock on wood}! It is nice to sometimes keep an area empty just to see how you feel about it. 9 times out of 10 I wind up filling up with something, although not necessarilty what was there. I don't know if I have a signature piece. I like to use books a lot throughout the house, so they seem to be everywhere!
ReplyDeleteI am sorry you got the flu. So did I. I am still not 100 percent.
ReplyDeleteI love your signature suitcases. Glad they got back!
I don't think I have a signature piece...but I do love my Old pieces here and there around our home.
My signature piece is my chicken chair (the fabric has hens on it) that is half finished. (it's an oversized wingback I'm working on recovering.)
ReplyDeleteIt pretty much represents my life..a bit unfinished. But I still enjoy sitting and reading in it, although it's not done yet.
I love your suitcases. They actually inspired me to look for pieces similar to store some of my important papers and pictures in. That way I can grab and go in case of an emergency.
I love that! What a great idea!
ReplyDeleteI love all your suitcases. So fun! I think my signature items in my house are my old windows. Love them!
ReplyDeleteI love your suitcase stack! My signature piece is an obelisk. Is the plant under the glass cloche real?
ReplyDeleteSure DO~ TOYS & Laundry! ;)
ReplyDeleteYour vintage suitcase collection was the first thing I noticed when I originally found your blog. I love the stacked suitcases and I am glad you brought them back. My signature pieces would be my basket collection and my transferware pieces. Glad you are feeling better.

wow.. its a creative picture.. looks so nice..it seems someone is going on a long voyage...i spend my last holidays in Dubai and it was just too good
ReplyDeleteI love the vintage suitcase stack. I'd like to try the same idea for nightstands in my bedroom. However, with toddlers I'd like to find a way to try to attach them so they don't come apart - any ideas?
ReplyDeleteI don't have a signature piece as much as I have a signature color which is red. I LOVE red and I've always tried to incorporate it, some way, into every room of the house. However, when we moved last summer, I decided that it was the perfect opportunity to break with tradition when we decorated out new master bedroom. We purchased a new bed and as a result needed new bedding. I decided to go with gray and black which I LOVE! The good thing about going with the gray and black is that I can add red if I want in the way of art or accent pillows but I don't have to, or I can interchange accents depending on my mood.
ReplyDeleteLove, love, love the suitcases!
ReplyDeleteI am a little late on this post but I am absolutely in love with your suitcases - Very cool!
ReplyDeleteI love your wall color! I am going to paint my walls and wonder if you could tell me the color and brand? Thanks.
ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful collection !!! I don't have such a collection, but a lot of different signature pieces: my coffee machine, vases, a clock, 2 hat displays etc... :)
ReplyDeleteI wanted to let you know I featured your Suitcases on my blog today! Love the display... I pinned them too!
