Music For The Eyes

At the end of the hall in my basement is a funny little space. I have never understood what the builder was thinking when he built this spot. Originally it had a bi-fold door on it, leading a person to think that it might be a closet. But who builds a closet that is less than ten inches deep? Even if they would have taken the time to build shelves inside, what items would you store in such a small place? Finally, after years of being annoyed with this dead end, I decided to do something with it. I knew with a little creativity, I could turn this worthless spot into a place of interest and beauty.
I found a book of accordion music at the thrift store for a dollar.
It has handwritten dates inside of when the owner played some of the pieces. They were dated 1954! The pages show their age. I love how yellowed they are.I tore out the pages and adhered them to the inside of the "closet", using wallpaper paste, overlapping the pages and adding parts of pages for interest.I knew I achieved my goal when one of my sons walked by and said, "That's interesting." To which I replied, "Interesting is much better than what it was before." Now, the fun begins! I'm off to find some things to put in this interesting place.

That's so fun, Joy! I never would have thought of that. The possibilities for that space are now virtually endless!

I wonder what that space was supposed to actually be used for? I'm trying to figure something out (other than too small closet), but I have no clue!

I have a closet just like this (9 inches deep) with shelves from top to bottom. I use it to store cleaning supplies, medicine, first aid stuff, kleenex, extra TP, the iron. What I like about it is that it's shallow, so nothing gets lost or overlooked. However, if we had moved here and there weren't any shelves in it, I'm sure I would have been scratching my head as to what i was supposed to do with it.

I like what you've done with yours and look forward to seeing what else you add.

Way Cool! I would hang old photo's of family done in sepia tones....maybe in black distressed frames...oh, and maybe get a narrow table to slide in at the bottom, or just an old wooden chair.... maybe find some kind of an old accordion or stringed instrument to set on the chair...can't wait to see what you do with it! ♥ Lewaina

Hmmm...that is a weird space. When Hobby Lobby had their Christmas stuff at 90% off I found some stocking hooks that looked like musical instruments and the hook part was removable. They would look good in your space.

that looks soooo cool. It's like a big framed piece of art. You're so brave I wouldn't have had the guts to do that.

A #10 can (the big cans that you get at costco) is only 7" deep. Shelves + a bi-fold door = great food storage place!

How about hanging wrapping paper and ribbon across the top half and put in an Ikea Norbo wall mount drop leaf table? Voila- a wrapping station behind your closet door.

The table below turned out great, too. Love it!
And the curtains...another great!

I would have thought it was meant to store brooms, mops and buckets in. Too bad that it didn't have shelves in it.

Your decorations are beautiful though and I can't wait to see what you make it be.

With an outlet added to it, it might have been a nice place for a fold-down ironing board to stay! ;)

My Dad played the accordion back in the 50's... my mom still has his old squeezebox in a closet in her den. :)

We have one of those closets too! It never occurred to me to do anything with it, my kids usually clean the hall and family room by shoving everything in there.

So creative!
