Colorful Closets

Simple Joys...those glimpses of life that we should take time embrace, the reminders that it's the small and simple things that make life beautiful.

The closets of our home are full of color. . . . .
even when there are no clothes hanging in them. For nearly half of my mother's life she has been making these
yarn covered hangers
. (A tutorial can be found HERE)
She has literally made hundreds of them for family and to give as gifts.
I remember taking a trip with a college friend when I was in my late teens. My mom put a bundle of these homemade hangers into my suitcase for me to give as a hostess gift for my friend's relative whose home we stayed. I was proud as well as a little embarrassed (the mixed emotions of a teenager) to present the made-by-hand gift. These colorful hangers have been a part of my life for most of my life. They remind me of my mother's creative and hardworking hands, and of her giving spirit.
They are a simple joy.
Do you have a made-by-hand simple joy?

Thank you for this... My mother writes me a hand written snail mail letter every week. It's my 'hanger' thing with her :)

my mom made me an apron that is pretty ugly, but i know she put her best effort and was so excited to give it to me. i'd like to make a matching one for my daughter so we can match in the kitchen.

Wow, I've never seen this before! I'm sure the clothes stay on SO much better. How creative :)

I too have many of thess hangers made by different people. They are handy to have.
I make knitted dish clothes and crocheted potholders for people. You either love them or you hate them. I soon know which ones appreciate them and those who do not. But enjoy making them.
When my Aunt (who raised me) was living she did alot of sewing for me. Those items will always be special.

You just brought a smile to my face. I remember making these hangers when I was a Girl Scout. We made them for our mothers as Mother's Day gifts.
They really do help the clothes stay on.

My best- Diane

My grandma taught me how to make the yarn covered hangers when I was a kid :)

I have been sick and am trying to catch up on my blog reading: my Gran crocheted over wooden hangers and they are my most prized possession from her - even though she passed away over 25 years ago.

Thank you so much for posting this. I had many of these hangers that my grandmother made but she's gone now. I think she crocheted hers but I can see this would work just as well. I'm going to give it a try since I need more. As my kids have moved out they've taken the hangers with them. I enjoy your blog very much. Thanks!
