Be The Designer

This lovely home belongs to my client and friend Tristan. I've been lucky enough to work with her for a few years. We met when her home was being built and I've had the great pleasure of laughing with her and designing for her. I've showed you a part of her beautiful home already when I designed this wall that her talented husband built. This week she asked me to help solve a few design dilemmas she has with her kitchen. She's feeling that her kitchen needs a little pizzazz and that there's a little too much bright white.
Here's a hint of the colors she'd like to use. Her main concerns are the pantry door and her white table and chairs. I gave her my ideas and, since she knows that I write a blog, we thought it might be fun for my creative readers to give her some suggestions too. So. . . here's your chance to
be the designer! What suggestions do you have for Tristan's kitchen?****Don't forget to enter the Ramsign giveaway****

What a lovely home!. Perhaps she could paint her table legs with a color she already has in her kitchen. I would pick a soft turquoise, and then paint her chairs black to match the chairs at her island. I would also add chair pads with a patterned fabric,(striped) that includes the colors pale yellow and just a hint of red. Then carry on with co-ordinating fabrics for her island chairs and simple panels for her window. The pantry door I would paint out the chalkboard with a soft yellow background and a creamy quatrofoil stencil. She could always paint out a pretty mirror frame, in red, and add chalkboard paint to that instead. Work with the colors she has and enjoys, with the existing accessories in her rooms, just expand on them a bit. - Jenny

Fun idea, Joy! Pizazz, huh? Hmm, well something simple for the pantry door might be to do a vinyl or something that just says "Pantry" in a lovely font. Depending on how funky she wants to get, she could paint each chair a different color taking the colors from those items on her counter or just find a fabric with those colors in it and have cushions done for the chairs. I'd probably carry that over to the stools, too, although they might look fun in cushions that are a solid color of each of those colors shown. Something simple as towels incorporating those colors might work well, too. Have fun with it!

No designer here....but I say a good place to start are the chairs...The sign is adorable, but really the only thing in that color.

I think a nice colorful canister set on the counter would be nice. If you have a HomeGoods near by they always have nice canister sets and a lot of cute kitchen items. You could do your whole kitchen just from that store alone. How about a plate stand with different colored plates? I have a large candle stand in wrought iron on my island with a few fake berries and flowers around the base to add color and a chunky candle stick on each side. As far as the pantry you could go with vinyl lettering (I just happen to know of some twins that specialize in this. HA!) to put on the door. Can't wait to see what you come up with.

Beautiful! I would probably begin with changing the lights over the island, they get lost in the cabinetry from the living room. Maybe red industrial farm pendants? She has a little bit of room above her cabinets to display fun baskets and pottery, but the real space is on the walls around the pantry and back doors. Maybe EAT above the pantry and and stacked vintage signs on the wall next to the pack door. Soda brands often have those colors incorporated. This could even be a DIY. I'd also change out the eating nook chairs with slip covered ones or vintage, chippy mismatched pieces.

I would paint the chairs the same color as the frame above the cooktop and also the pantry door in that color!!!...but I have to say that's my favorite color!!!

I would add a patterned rug with some turquoise under the table and another one in the kitchen. Slip covers or seat pillows with a print in turquoise would add some color to the chairs and bar stools.

Don't muck with the cabinets. If she absolutely wants to do something with the cabinets eye the island.

I'd go with the chair legs and backs, the table legs and perhaps the back door and the pantry door.

I'd stick with the tones and colors in the last picture of the bowls and spoons. They blend better with the colors of her counter tops and walls.

She could always add splashes of red and turquoise in her decorations. Let's face it, Utah is usually a couple of years behind the trend in colors....using lots of turquoise NOW may lead to a bit of remorse if down the line trends change.

I would also second the pendant lighting over the island.

Now, you wanna come and do my house? heh.

I would change out the rug under the table for something with more color and I would paint the bar stools a more eye popping color. She might consider different pendants over the island as they blend in a bit. I love the kitchen though, really gorgeous. Oh and maybe curtains for the dining area with some color and to soften that area (and just keep up the plantation shutters which are pretty). Maybe a roman shade on the kitchen door window. Mostly I would try to add some texture/layers. Good luck and show us the afters!

#1 Paint the wall color in a pale metallic neutral khaki- a few shades darker than the cabinets. That darkish green is working against the marriage of the whites and creams. Once lightened up, all the white wood will look like it belongs there.

#2 add a striped rug that contains all the colors that make her happy

#3 this cabinet style is not farmhouse, so even if she likes that, she should be a bit more traditional in her accessories

#4 I'd skip the turquoise, and concentrate on the red, with black, browns, and yellows as accents-colors that could be in the rug/chair cushions, etc.

#5 the island is where she can do some changes-do it red! Or yellow...maybe do the island chairs white?

#6-For a quick fix,add some brown glazing to all the white wood that is already there-that will at least tone down the white, and mix it in with the cabinets a lil more...

have fun!

What a beautiful kitchen and home! The first thing I would suggest is to change the wall color and add a great backsplash to make the kitchen pop. An aqua colored glass tile backsplash would be lovely. The wall color blends in and hides her contertops amd makes her cabinets look a little too bright in contrast. For something fun she could paint her pantry door a darker red and add some vinyl wording and backlight it. I like the previous commenters suggest of changing out the pendant lights as they too blend into the background. For the table, I would refinsh the top in a dark walnut stain to match the island chairs and floor and bring out the warmth. A great colorful rug would help to tie the colors together. Thanks for letting me share!
