A Well Schooled Table

My favorite time of year is fall. With fall comes the beginning of school. I like school. I like everything related to school. I like school supplies. One of my favorite birthday gifts from my boys was a bouquet of freshly sharpened pencils. My love of school led me to earn two college degrees in education, a bachelors degree in early childhood education and I stopped just short of getting my masters degree in special education. I taught special education until I retired to be a stay at home mom. One day, when my children no longer need me to be a SAHM, I want to go back to school. So it's no surprise that one of my favorite pieces of furniture, that we didn't build ourselves, is an old school table. This table is six feet long. I painted it an unusual shade of green, antiqued it, and I left all of the holes and dents and dings from years of students. I did remove all of the old wads of gum underneath though---you can take authenticity only so far. If you look carefully, at the end of the table, you can see the holes left from where the pencil sharpener sat.

This table was originally a hall table in our basement. But I liked it so much that I gave it a more prominent place in my living room. One day my mom asked, "Do you really think it goes there?" I nodded my head yes. Sure it's a different color than anything else in the room, and the style is different too. But it makes me happy and so it will stay, no matter what anyone says about it. Besides, I think it's a good thing to mix things up a little when it comes to the design of your home. I think your home should reflect you and your personality. And if you love something, it shouldn't matter what anyone else thinks.
Do you have a piece of furniture in your home that seems a little out of place to others, but you love it and display it proudly?

I think it is so cute. It is fun to use things that have a little history. You do it so well.

I think it looks just perfect right there! What a neat little story behind it. Susie H

I love that table! I don't think it looks out of place at all!

I don't *think* I have a piece of furniture that seems out of place with the others in my house... maybe someone else would think so! *Ü*

By the way... I got those track lights up in my kitchen- like you suggested. Thanks again for the help!! I'll post pics on my blog later.

i love making your house, YOURS!
It's a sight to behold and I think we might be related - given the amount of text I plan to use and given the pics on your blog *we think alike with the projects/decor/etc.*
and I also have several degrees in education -

I have friends who have the absolute minimum in their homes and they don't like 'clutter' or variety, for that matter - I don't try and bring my values into their domain - I respect their homes and whatever they decide to do with it.
As for me and my house, I will decorate on several walls, in every corner there's a theme - lots of colorful paintings and pictures make me extremely happy -

I had a yard sale last year girl - My minimalist friends came over and just about had to be rushed to the emergency room - they were in shock that i had so much stuff to sell - good/great/ fantastic stuff -
One friend was so shocked, the next day, she brought her husband by - i thought that was insulting, but I had nothing to be ashamed of -
except me for who I am - and I'll except you for who you are -
Last, variety is what is lacking in most women's lives - I'm glad I've found a kindred spirit in you that you have a colorful approach to real living! Thank God for that!

I love the art of bringing it together - I have friends who knudge each other - couples do too, who are engineers and neat freaks - oh well - they might talk, but I don't mind - I do not have to
