In Comparison

Two years ago I discovered design blogs. It was an awesome discovery for me! It's like opening up the pages of a new magazine every day. Every photo is nearly picture perfect with inspiration galore!
I've been thrilled to read of some bloggers who've had the opportunity to actually have their homes photographed for magazines. What a dream come true! I have also been amazed to read just what these photo sessions entail: make-up artists, lighting experts, caterers, wardrobe specialists, and prop designers with loads and loads of beautiful accessories. All these people come in and turn the average pretty home into photos of a home that we drool over and long to have. And we look around and compare our home to what we see on the glossy pages---a home that has now become more of a gorgeous set design than the lived-in, real home it was before all of the specialists swooped in with all of their magical effects.
As I looked around my home this morning I thought about all of the things that would have to be changed in order to have it photographed for a magazine.
The remains of homework left on the dining room table.
Birthday sacks strewn across the floor, remnants of a wonderful family celebration.A bounty of toys to entertain my beautiful granddaughter.Doors to our entertainment center left open wide from late night veiwing.A crumpled up heating blanket deserted by a preteen in the early, chilly hours of the morning. And stacks of books piled high beneath collections of pretty pottery. Is my home ready for a magazine photo shoot?
Not at all.
But it is picture perfect to me.

Absolutely! Your pictures are "real". I've never had my work in a magazine {yet}, but I understand that they wind up moving the way you keep your everyday stuff to look better for the picture anyway, so once the camera's leave half that stuff probably gets put back where it was before.

That's the beauty of our homes different from the magazines- We live in those beautiful environments we create! Your photos show that Life occurs there.
have a great day!

I totally say that it's ready...It's a real life lived in home...Your home shows the love and devotion you give to your family on a day to day basis.

That is just the difference between life and art.

Your blog inspires me and having a family with five children of my own, I understand the our home is really awesome feeling. If it was always so picture perfect, that would be the sign of a dull life! (That's my opinion anyway, maybe that's how I keep my sanity!)

What a great post! I enjoyed it and can totally relate to the 'joys' of finding blogs, to the 'joys' of decorating your home, to the 'joys' of a picture perfect house! Nice to know I'm not alone!

With 4 children, I often feel like my home will never be picture perfect. But really, I don't think I'm looking for perfect. I'm looking for comfortable!

I concur..
and join all you ladies who enjoy their live-in totally liveable homes!
who would want to live in a sterile picture perfect place anyhow?
hugs and big smiles!

Love it! I've discovered those decorating blogs, too, and I think I was much happier before. Now I compare and always fall short. Not only that, I think my blog was better before I started trying to keep up with the Joneses!

Perhaps the minute the camera is put away, those lovely homes become "lived in" once more. :)

You are so right.... I love working on my home, and I love that my home is LIVED in.... I have 4 kids running around here from 15 years old down to my 2 and 3 year olds. There is ALWAYS something down somewhere in this house.. If I get a room completely straight it MAY stay that way about 5 minutes...

I believe you must have been taking pictures at my house this weekend. I had MUCH company and after everyone left...my home looked exactly like yours. I wouldn't trade the fun we had for a clean home!!

I think your home looks like a lace where people feel comfortable, and like they can be themselves, and that is priceless!

The important thing is that the homework got done:)

I am so glad that my house isn't the only one that looks like this on a daily basis! Thank you for being real!

Your pictures would be of a home ... not just a styled house. People live and love there.

I had a kitchen photo shoot over the summer for the idea notebook section of country living magazine. Everything was perfect when the team arrived...two days before my designated day - I shipped my three kids off to stay at my moms. I had my husband basically living in the basement (it's finished thank goodness) My friend came over to help me, and we worked like dogs cleaning & straightening, with only a break for take out pizza (we ate outside) water and a little sleep. The magazine "people" kept commenting how nice & clean everything was. If they only knew, Lori

I must confess that I enjoy the pics of homes and projects where everything isnt "perfect" in them. Its more realistic to me to say look at the great project I did but Ive got kids homework left on the table than to portray a false image of a home that is "nice but no one lives here".

My house would need a makeover to be in a mag!

I am about to purchase a home and have the chance to make it my own. Would you mind sharing some of your favorite design blogs to get my creative juices flowing?

A home is HOME where there is LOVE, RESPECT and FAITHFULNESS.

How it is put together is not that important.

Just finished reading your interview on Creative Home Expressions. Thanks for sharing!

I have been fortunate to have several magazine shoots at my house over the past year. It was really a wonderful experience. Although I was proud to have my home featured, at the end of the day, it is the people who live in the house that make it beautiful.
