They were a beautiful shape and size but the finish was a bit confusing. Were they tarnished brass that resembled silver or were they silver plate rubbed down to the brass. 
Either way I liked them so they came home with me.Then I stumbled upon an article proclaiming the wonders of an inexpensive product that could easily be found in the automotive aisle.
This stuff really is magic-----that is if you can get beyond the horrendous odor of ammonia. I wore my paint mask while scrubbing away with an old towel that quickly turned black as I rubbed and rubbed.
But all of the odor and rubbing and elbow grease was worth it when the results are as dramatic as this little before and after. The new finish is a silver-ish with a gold undertone---a really beautiful combination.
Now my thrifted treasures are a real treasure find!

WOW! Thanks so much for the tip! I just learned about RubNBuff yesterday and now this! Now I won't be so hesitant about the tarnished stuff I see at the thrift shops.

Incredible! I had a collection of brass candle holders that will appreciate some of that stuff on them. Now, if
I just could only buy some" elbow grease". :) that will be marvelous.

That is amazing. I wonder what the candlesticks are made of? it reminds me of my flute playing days and how it is always really shiny after a good polish. Great finds!

wow! that is awesome! the "new" finish is SOOO pretty, and I would have just ruined it buy spray painting it white or something! I'm going to have to look for that little magic tub of stink!
What a find! They look very old and graceful.
